Toulouse's best small venues for live
rock music. Tues-Sat 9pm-2am.
Bagdam Café , 4 rue de la
Croix (tel 05.61.99.03.62). Bohemian
place, catering for women only, with
readings, music and drama as well as
coffee, drinks and food. Tues-Sat from
7pm. Closed mid-Aug to mid-Sept.
Bar du Matin , 16 place des
Carmes. Great old street-corner bar in
the finest beer, peanuts and pastis
tradition. A friendly and deservedly
popular place. Mon-Sat 8am-11pm.
Bodega-Bodega , 1 rue Gabriel-Péri.
The old Telegraph newspaper
building makes a superb venue for this
bar-restaurant, with its hugely popular
disco after 10pm. Daily 7pm-2am, till
4am on Sat.
Le Chat d'Oc , 7 rue de Metz.
Hip bar near the Garonne, attracting a
mixed crowd which gets younger as the
night progresses. Nightly animations
include DJs and occasional live acts,
with themes from grunge to Goth. Mon-Fri
7am-2am, Sat 9am-5am.
Erich Coffie , 9 rue Joseph-Vié
(tel 05.61.42.04.27). Just west of the
river in the quartier St-Cyprien, this
is one of the city's liveliest and most
enjoyable music bars (food available),
with an eclectic music policy. Live
bands most evenings. Open Tues-Sat from
10pm.
Le Fair Play , 4 allées
Paul-Feuga. A great bar for sports fans,
which fills up whenever there is a
football or rugby match or jai alai
to watch. Happy hour Thurs 6-8pm.
The Frog & Rosbif , 14 rue de
l'Industrie. Stop by this friendly
British pub, just off bd Lazare-Carnot,
for a pint of Darktagnan stout,
or one of their other excellent
home-brews. Quiz nights, football and
fish and chips draw a surprisingly
international crowd. Mon-Fri & Sun
5.30pm-2am, Sat 2pm-4am. Closed part

Hey Joe , place Héraclès.
Popular disco with theme nights on
Thursdays. Men pay 50F/¬7.63, women get
in free; happy hour midnight-1am. Open
daily 11pm-5am.

11 place des Puits Clos. Popular with
the grunge set, this bar has a good
patio by day and DJs by night. Mon-Sat
10am-2am.
Le Petit Voisin , 37 rue
Peyrolières. A neighbourhood place, just
like the name says, laid-back during the
day, and with DJs at night. Open Mon-Fri
7.30am-2am, Sat 8am-4am. Closed mid-Aug.
Thélème, l'Abbaye , 41 rue
Paradoux. Friendly bohemian refuge where
customers and staff play guitar or
piano. Fine wines and select light
snacks are on offer. Occasional literary
nights. Open Mon & Wed-Sun from 7pm.
L'Ubu , 16 rue St-Rome (tel
05.61.23.26.75). Long-standing pillar of
the city's dance scene, which remains as
popular as ever. Mon-Sat 11pm till dawn.
Film, theatre and live music
Drinking and dancing aside, there is
still plenty to do at night in Toulouse.
Several cinemas regularly show
v.o. films, including: ABC, 13 rue

extremely vibrant theatre culture

Nouveau Théâtre Jules-Julien, 6 av des
Écoles-Jules-Juliens (Mon-Fri 9am-noon &

venues, such as Odyssud, 4 av du Parc
Blagnac (tel 05.61.71.75.15; bus #66),
feature both theatre and opera ,
while the Orchestre National du Capitole
has its base in the Halle aux Grains on
place Dupuy (tel 05.61.99.78.00,

city's biggest concert venue
(9000 seats), specializing in rock, is
Zénith at 11 av Raymond Badiou (tel

Cave-Poesie at 71 rue de Taur (tel
05.61.23.62.00) is home to literary
workshops and gatherings of a decidedly
bohemian spirit.
